Communicating Good. Design.

I generally consider myself to be a private person and others express difficulty getting to know me. I would much rather stay home and send a check rather than attend a big fundraiser or other social event. I am much more likely to write a letter or put my feelings on paper than ever to share them in person. In short, I'm introverted and being around other people takes a lot of energy away from me. I re-energize by being alone with my thoughts.

This personality trait contrasts, however, to the version of me walking through the campus design building after learning a new skill in class. I feel a flood of potential for connection with others and a desire to share. I see each new technique and lesson as an opportunity for self expression. Not only am I learning to create art, but I'm also gaining a new method of communicating with others. As I gain more confidence in my artistic ability, I also gain comfort in "letting others in" just as I have with my writing.

In the past, I was aware that I possessed creativity, but also that I lacked the ability to share it broadly with others. I was limited to working through other artists and having to point at canvases and computer screens while struggling to explain my thoughts in a foreign language. "Can you help Jordan make pretty picture?" As I develop expertise in Photoshop, digital photography, and Illustrator along with pencil, pastels, water colors, charcoal, and other media, I have been surprised that I am so quick to want to share it with others. And I'm not terribly shy about it either. I will quantify my work with "novice" or "amateur", but with that stated, all are welcome to pull up a chair in this salon and join in the topic du jour.
